Bob Dylan played pool in Kingston, but where?

"Bob Dylan playing pool, Kingston, N.Y., 1964." reads the caption on a photo of by Daniel Kramer, who followed Dylan for a year starting in Woodstock.

I stumbled upon that factoid on a recent Google alert. I masochistically send myself alerts for all things Kingston N.Y., which mostly leads back to news items from local news sources, and also out of town obits and police items related to Kingston natives or people who live here, and the occasional gem like this.

As I'm wont to do, I took to the power of the crowd to find out where in Kingston this photo was taken. There was nobody to ask about this here on a very quiet Easter newsroom Sunday. It would have been easier to scream across the room, after all, but it was not to be this time.

Over at the "I'm from Kingston" Facebook group. I was informed that this was on the second third  floor of the Clermont building, on top of what used to be Bop to Tottom, which is the red on the 360 image above. The first floor, will become a larger Duo Bistro. It was Uptown Billiards at 293 Wall Street in Kingston.

That's Mercury Rev's Sean "Grasshopper" Mackowiak  in that tweet..

Kramer shot the cover of Highway 61, among other things.

Among those other things shot by Kramer, is a photo of Bob Dylan playing chess in Woodstock.
Time to yell at the cloud again.
Where in Woodstock was this photo taken?

Uptaded 3/29 at 11 a.m. Matt Cahill, in the comments, points out:

The pool hall was not on the second floor of the Clermont building,but the 3rd floor.The 2nd floor was Eng's chinese restaurant,and prior to that it was Shanghai Lou.The pool hall was woned by Nick Caslich and later by Bob East.
Managing Editor Tony Adamis reminded me that former staffer Jesse J. Smith (now with the Kingston Times) wrote about this a while back. I was able to track the story to the microfilm and the disk in the building, and I've reposted it online, because it was removed online at some point during a site migration.

I've also found the David McDonald's "Bob Dylan in Woodstock" segment from the 2006 documentary. "Woodstock Revisited," also embedded below.

Don't worry. Be Woodstock

Woodstock, being Woodstock. Finger at bottom right is mine because I can't take photos.
The town of Woodstock is the star of its own show, and people come from all over to watch it every weekend. Some episodes feel like re-runs, but it's always nice to tune it and get lost in the magic every now and then. You be you, Woodstock.

Santa arrives in Woodstock in a rocket ship

It's a known tradition. Santa arrives in Woodstock every Christmas Eve in many peculiar and unannounced ways.
This year, he came in a rocket ship, thanks to Steve Heller of Fabulous Furniture in Boiceville, no doubt. Here's a tweet from writer Martha Frankel (Heller's other half), explaining.

The video description states:

The Lindsey Webster Band sang on a float in front. The float was setup as his workshop, complete with his elves, tools, giant toys, a Jack in the Box jumping up and down, a dancing ballerina, nutcrackers, and with him riding in the Rocket Ship on top. Of course he was accompanied by the famous dancing Woodstock Reindeer and Frosty the Snow Woman. Produced by Cinemanomoly

Woodstock native suspends man by skin from bottom of hot air balloon almost 11,000 feet in air for documentary

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA????

Former Woodstock resident Sean Devine, along with his partner, Matt Morgan of Precarious Egg, a Portland, Oregon-based film production company, suspended a man by hooks through his skin from the bottom of a hot air balloon in Mammoth Lakes, Calif. on June 11.

The stunt was part of Precarious Egg’s documentary, "Feet Off the Ground," an exploration of the human suspension community. Zane Whitmore, 34, of Seattle, was pierced two times across the shoulder blades and suspended beneath a tethered hot air ballon, which then was released to circle the skies above the Long Valley Caldera as Whitmore hung below. The balloon reached a maximum height of around 10,800 feet above sea level during the approximately 75 minute flight.

“This balloon suspension is really the culmination of several years of immersing ourselves in the body modification and suspension communities,” Morgan said in a prepared statement. “We wanted to explore the motivations and humanity of this often maligned subculture, to bring their experiences to a wide audience.”

Morgan and Devine expect primary shooting to wrap by the end of the summer, and plan to premiere Feet Off the Ground in 2012.

Seeger wins Grammy

Folk legend and Beacon resident Pete Seeger is contending for a Grammy Award tonight. UPDATE: HE WON!!!

The album "Tomorrow's Children" by  Seeger With The Rivertown Kids And Friends and produced by Appleseed Records, received the nomination in the Best Musical Album For Children category.

According to the record label, "When Beacon fourth-grade teacher Tery Udell invited Clearwater educator and singer Dan Einbender to teach her students about the Hudson, class sessions became songfests, and where there are songs, there’s Pete. He became a regular visitor to the kids’ classroom in 2007.

"The classroom gatherings and performances inevitably led to a series of recordings by Pete, Dan, musician and CD co-producer (with Dan) David Bernz, the children (known as “The Rivertown Kids”), as well as adult musicians, high schoolers and even 14 grammar school percussion students." Collaborators of the album also included Dar Williams and Seeger's wife Toshi.

Another area resident up for a Grammy is Woodstock's Steve Earle, who received a nomination in the Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media category. Earle's song, "This City," was featured on the HBO show "Treme," which has as a cast member Melissa Leo of Stone Ridge. UPDATE: HE LOST

Also nominated is "Healthy Food for Thought" in the Best Spoken Word Album for Children category,  and Phoenicia's Robert Burke 'Uncle Rock' Warren contributed in that effort. UPDATE: THE ALBUM LOST.

SOUND OFF: Monday, Dec. 13, 2010

Today's Sound Off, a selection of Daily Freeman comments, is about UFOs, criminals and a guy named "Barrack":

hurleyguy wrote on Area "UFO support group offers place to share questions, experiences"
" Anyone who questions the veracity of this article, who doubts that extraterrestrials walk among us, and that past abductees eschew meat, has merely to visit Woodstock on a Sunday afternoon. Besides, the interviewee has a Doctorate of Metaphysics. You can't get much more authoritative than that! "

geezer wrote on "Four arrested in Woodstock home invasion case"
"These crimes are being committed by locals...I moved here to escape this crap...time to lock doors and keep the old 12 gauge handy...very upsetting!"

Viking1946 wrote on "Federal judge in Virginia strikes down health care law"

"Great news, thankfully it was not heard by the 9th circuit court in San Franscisco. Take that Barrack, the Constitution still has meaning for today."

NYT discovers Rosendale, theater

The New York Times' David Applebome "discovered" Rosendale and wrote about it in his "Our Towns" column today, more than a year after discovering Woodstock., because, you know, they're that far apart. Applebome focused on the Rosendale Theatre Collective.

What words do you think were used in the column?

* Quaint
* Artsy
* Creaky
* Woodstock
* Rosendale Rocks
* All of the above

Here are both articles, in cloud form:
