John Leguizamo selling Rosendale home

Actor John Leguizamo is selling his Rosendale home, according to Realtor.com.

The home is in the map below, at 293 Binnewater Road, a road that is home to many a tiny crossing turtles and an evil deer of doom that totaled my Chevy one sad snowy winter night some years ago.

The 2,612 square-foot home, listed for $835 big ones, features four bedrooms, three baths and sits on 7.64 acres.

It also has a pool in front of fourth lake.

'60 Minutes'' Sovereign Citizens story drops by Rosendale

"I have liens against me in three states in this country for a half a billion dollars," Robert Vosper, the town justice in Rosendale, told CBS correspondent Byron Pitts.

If you are wondering what happened after, here are some stories on that subject.

OMG! Every town in the mid-Hudson Valley is the 'new Brooklyn'

Many a twittering/facebooking person sent me a link to the New York Daily News real estate feature in Kingston on Friday, which called the first capital of New York "Brooklyn north."

I read it with some interest and amusement (It's nice to see people you know or cover featured on big dailies). But there was something off.

I could have sworn I'd seen this type of story before.

Note also that in the photo, 'Downtown' looks a lot like Uptown.

I'm am not trying to say this is not good publicity for the city, or all the other communities involved. But I'm getting a little - just a little - bothered by New York City dailies' condescending tone and the overall tone of the pieces.

All have the same elements.
So here's how to make your "x town is the new Brooklyn" story.

* Feature a hipster who has recently moved to the area (I mean that in the best of ways, unlike this).
* Imply that the town is a crappy place to live.
* Imply that the town is vibrant and cool now because said hipster moved there.

Done!
.

In short, Kingston is not the new Brooklyn. Kingston is the new Kingston. And we should all be proud of that. (Also, what is Midtown, the new Harlem?)

Anyway, kudos to the Kingston Digital Corridor - whose members are meeting tomorrow in an event in conjunction with the Ulster County Musicians Network. I'll be dropping by to livestream some of it (it's a fundraiser for the Queens Galley, and it's at Keegan Ales in the city, so there will be beer).
So I'll see you there.

The band that became The Beatles stops by Rosendale

The Rosendale Theatre hosted the band that would eventually become The Beatles over the weekend.

Oh, yes. It did.

The Quarrymen, which formed in Liverpool in 1956 and reunited in 1997, came to the area on Friday to celebrate the Oct. 9 (you guys!) 70th birthday of the late John Lennon.

The Quarrymen perform in Rosebery Street, Liverpool, on June 22, 1957. From left are Colin Hanton, Eric Griffiths, John Lennon, Len Garry, Pette Shotton and Rod Davis (Wikipedia photo).
Below, in a photo by Ted Dixon, the surviving members of the band,  from left, Rod Davis, Colin Hanton, a poser congressman who is not in the band but who is running for re-election so his name won't be mentioned here, and Len Garry, enjoy a moment together in Rosendale.

I think (I'm going to blog), therefore I am (writing something nobody's going to read)

Here's the pulse of the Hudson Valley, in blogs, courtesy of http://www.dailyfreeman.com/blogs.

* Ulster County Legislator Michael Madsen talks about the most important issues to county residents: Parks, mixed martial arts and something called "RACIING"

* Ulster County Comptroller Elliott Auerbach reads the Freeman's police blotter.

* City of Kingston Alderwoman Andi Turco-Levin learns that you don't mess with Crazy Cat Lady.

* Kingston Main Street Manager Nancy Donskoj highlights some local organic dead animal parts.

* Over At The Farmer's Market, Grilled Romaine Salad. It goes great with local organic dead animal parts.

* The Ulster County Development Corp. notices that The New York Times wrote about Rosendale again, because it's like Brooklyn, but without the hipsters.

* A Study Abroad SUNY New Paltz student is in Wales, so he talks about some TV shows.

...

PERSONAL NOTE: The three of you who follow me on Twitter already know that I'm spending some time at the newsroom of the New Haven Register - where you can read "Hooters waitress files lawsuit - says she lost weight." I'm pretending that I'm helping upgrade the Daily Freeman's editorial system as we enter a new era (did you know there's a thing called The Internets? Wild stuff).

Anyway, here's a present I found at the New Haven Register's mailroom.

Refreshing

Carrie Wykoff of the Rosendale Theater Collective reports, via Facebook:

We did it! Out of 362 projects across the United States competing for a $50,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant, the Rosendale Theatre Collective has finished in the number one spot. The Collective wants to thank profusely all of the supporters who made the effort to vote throughout April. An estimated 3,000 votes each day were needed to secure a top ten spot.

The support the Rosendale Theatre Collective has received in the past six months through donations, votes, volunteers etc. has been awe-inspiring. We've asked for your help and you've answered with a resounding yes! With much optimism and gratitude, we approach the achievement of our goal of officially purchasing the theater.

We hope your support will continue. We have a couple of other fundraising events you can enjoy in May: an online auction and a Middle Eastern Feast and Party, and more (go to www.rosendaletheatre.org for the details). Any donation, big or small, will be gratefully appreciated and will allow us to buy the theater, take the reins in June, and keep our promise to continue to expand this vibrant cultural center. When you walk through the doors of the Rosendale Theatre, know that you made a difference. We all thank you for your help and support.

And Sue Lichtenberg of the Hudson Valley Youth Ensembles reports, also via Facebook:

It's a beautiful mornin'....... We ended up in the top 10 at # 7! What a ride! There have been soooo many people that have helped with this project. Let me say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

Next step: verification process. The finalists will be receiving a packet via email and we will have to complete all the paperwork within 2 weeks. After Pepsi has verified everything, then they will make it official that we are grant winners. That happens towards the end of the month.

We could not have done this without your support! THANK YOU again!

Rosendale Theatre Collective leading Pepsi challenge

The Rosendale Theatre Collective is currently leading the Pepsi challenge. If the group wins, it will get $50,000.

Voting ends today.

The Collective was leading earlier in the month. But then the New York Times wrote about it, and it moved to second place.

Just sayin'

The Hudson Valley Youth Wind Ensembles is No. 7, by the way, and will most likely move to next month's voting.

Good luck to all.

NYT discovers Rosendale, theater

The New York Times' David Applebome "discovered" Rosendale and wrote about it in his "Our Towns" column today, more than a year after discovering Woodstock., because, you know, they're that far apart. Applebome focused on the Rosendale Theatre Collective.

What words do you think were used in the column?

* Quaint
* Artsy
* Creaky
* Woodstock
* Rosendale Rocks
* All of the above

Here are both articles, in cloud form:
