How to live stream a Google Hangout

Do you want to live stream your Google+ Hangout?

Google now lets all hangouts be streamed live, so you don’t need a Livestream, Ustream or Manycam workaround anymore (which was a royal pain).

All you need is a Google+ account and a Youtube channel:

1. Start a Hangout and click Enable Hangout on Air when the Hangout window pops up. Add the people you want in. You can’t make an On Air-anything-goes hangout, you have to invite your followers, preferably just a selected few.

2. Hit OK, I’ve got it’ and start your hangout. It will still be off Youtube (If you’re not connected to Youtube, it will ask you to do so)

3.1 Grab the embed code. It’s your regular iframe code. Post on your site OR YOUR SCRIBBLELIVE BLOG. Only those participating in the Hangout can see what’s going on. Everyone else sees this
3.2 Once you’re ready, hit broadcast. When you stop it takes almost no time for the replay  hangout to appear on your Youtube channel. Then you can post that or download and put in your own container.

And yes, I eat my pencils.
Enjoy

Edit note: This post was edited to change "livestream" and any similar term, to "live streams," to avoid confusion with the live streaming service (see comments below).

DFM chat on user-generated content via Instagram, Pinterest, SeeClickFix, oh my!

Good morning! Journalists, members of Digital First Media and pretty much everyone else who wants to - are going to be taking part on the weekly Twitter chat at noon, Eastern Time.

User generated content can be highly popular, especially if it's cops getting Tased
Today we're talking about user generated content: How to get it, vet it, use it. The ethics of it all, and dealing with new tools. How do you deal with photos from Instagram if they've been altered? How do you vet the source of a Pinterest pin or a post in SeeClickFix? How do you credit a YouTube source? What in the world are you talking about?

The live feed is posted below. But you can also follow the chat here or here or also here. And you can also check out past chats over here.

If you want to chime in, just post a tweet with the hashtag "#dfmchat" so it can automatically appear below.

What happened to the QR codes in the Freeman?

Late last year, I began experimenting with quick response (QR) codes in the print edition of the Daily Freeman.

I created a Likify code and placed it at the bottom of the front page. I stayed there for a month. After gathering eight 'Likes' for our Facebook page, I decided to discontinue its run, at least on the front page, as it was using too much coveted 'real estate,' as we say in the biz (because, apparently, we want to be Realtors or something).

That was strike one for the code. I believe that if it was placed somewhere more permanently - like a flier or at distribution boxes around town, it couldn't hurt to have them (since it doesn't cost anything to maintain them, so there's no loss).

What worked against it was the fact that, most likely, you had to download a QR reader and then scan the thing to be send to a page to click the like button and then have to login to your Facebook account on your phone's browser, which probably looks like crap, because it doesn't work with Facebook apps. So instead of making it easier, it seemed to make it even more complicated for early users. My hat's off to those eight we went through it.

If you want to go through this yourself, here's a quick way of doing this.

Kingston video goes viral because people like to see Corvettes on fire

Featured blogger Clark Richters' video from last year of a Corvette bursting into flames at the 2010 Envy Frenzy car show in downtown Kingston has gone viral on YouTube.

The reason (other than the fact that it's a Corvette going up in flames)? Popular car websites around the country began picking them up.

Watch it burn:

Fake or Fake? We might never know

Gillette is reaping the benefits of this little clip of Roger Federer that's going viral, with more than 3 million views already.

Some YouTube comments:

* "I don't get how this can be fake"
* "Yes, I'm sure that guy would risk having his face broken in two. Two times. not."

The again, this is from a guy known to do things like this.

YouTube turns 5, so here are five YouTube videos

YouTube turned five years old, and a number of notables, including Conan O'Brian and Pedro Almodovar, curated their favorite videos. Katie Couric chose her best picks of YouTube citizen journalism.

I thought I could share my own favorites. So let's go, or - as we say online - "LEEEROOOOOOOY JENNNNKINS!!!!"

1. Slap! (I'm kind of cheating here, because I posted this one)

2. "Star Wars Cantina." Eddie Izzard. "Star Wars." Legos. 'nuf said.

3. "Saturday Morning Watchmen." Wrong in so many levels.

4. Sleepy Cat. because he's sleepy. And a cat.

5. The whole "You Suck at Photoshop" series. Originally located at MyDammedChannel.com. Here's part one.

The perfect gift for Mom

This thing was all the rage on the Internets last week. I didn't post it because it wasn't relevant to anything. But since Mother's Day is just around the corner, it might give you some ideas for presents.

Hitler meme faces downfall

If you are a fan of Internet memes, you probably have run into the many Hitler parodies taken from the movie "Downfall" that have been populating YouTube for years.

No more.

Mashable reports - and a simple YouTube search confirms - that the most popular parodies have already been taken down.

What's the 'Downfall' meme? Knowyourmeme.com explains:

“The Hitler Meme” or “Hitler finds out” is a video meme involving the addition of new subititles (sic) to the dramatic scene of Hitler’s final meltdown from the German movie Downfall directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel. The subtitles are often anachronistically altered with humerous (sic, geez!) English subtitles surrounding current events.

From the NYTimes: “Fire up YouTube. There you can see the Hitler figure erupt in frustration over his Xbox. He flips out because his friends aren’t going to Burning Man. And, recently, he loses it because Sarah Palin isn’t working out as a running mate. Something in the spectacle of an autocrat falling to pieces evidently has widespread appeal.”

That very Xbox parody got the ax already.

The most popular ones as of April 13, according to BBC News:

* Hitler gets banned from Xbox Live: 4,260,975
* Hitler finds out Kanye West Disses Taylor Swift: 1,067,024
* Usain Bolt Breaks 100m World Record: 1,096,241
* Ronaldo leaves Utd: 1,439,671
* Hitler Finds Out Sarah Palin Resigns: 497,903

Here's an example that's still up right now:
