Take a virtual tour of Falling Waters Preserve in Saugerties

Another one of my favorite hikes around the area is the Falling Waters Preserve in Saugerties, an easy hike with some rewarding views of the Hudson River and the falls, two of them, that give the preserve its name.

As with the previous tour of Shaupeneak Ridge The Street View map below constitutes many 360-degree images, all connected so that you can 'walk' around the pond. This time, there are more than 40 images, all taken on May 29.

'Doomsdays' in Saugerties

Passing along:

"Doomsdays," a feature film by Eddie Mullins starring Justin Rice and Leo Fitzpatrick, needs 15 to 20 extras on Saturday. Filmmakers are looking for people in their 20s, but say they will take people in their 30s.

Filming will take place at a private home in Elka Park, which is just up Platte Clove Road in West Saugerties (10 miles from Woodstock)

So what was up with that upside-down van at the Garlic Festival?

"Corner of Washington Avenue and Finger Street, Saugerties, van knocked upside down on impact, with minor injuries to a very lucky driver."

That was the somewhat cryptic message on Saturday from Hope Farm & Bookshop's Richard Frisbie.

So if you were wondering what happened on Saturday, the answer is: don't ask me. I wasn't there.

Justin Bieber won't be auctioned at Hors'n Around Unbridled Fun Gala and Auction Saturday

The  Hors'n Around Unbridled Fun Gala and Auction will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday under tents set up behind Stella's Station, 150 Partition Street, Saugerties.

The decorated horses that have been adorning Saugerties streets during the summer, including a certain controversial one, will be put up for auction.

Proceeds for the event go to the Saugerties Area Council of Churches (for its food pantry), the Cahill School PTA (for theplayground), participating artists and the Saugerties Chamber of Commerce.

Tickets are $25.

Bruce Springstein's daughter will be at Horse Shows in the Sun in Saugerties Sunday

"It is NO LONGER A RUMOR," says a rumor spread by the Bardavon.

"Jessica Springsteen WILL be competing and riding at the Pfizer $1 million dollar grand prix horse show prior to the John Fogerty concert this Sunday, September 12 at HITS in Saugerties!" wrote Chris Silva, executive director of the Poughkeepsie opera house (the Bardavon is sponsoring a concert at HITS on on Sunday).

Just in case you can't put two and two together, Silva continues:

"Bruce Springsteen has appeared onstage with John Fogerty on a number of occasions in recent years. So your $50 general admission festival seating ticket will not only get you entry to both the equestrian events and the John Fogerty concert, but it MAY even include a glimpse or a tune or two from the Boss himself."

Or, I should say, it may not.

Previously, Springsteen came to Saugerties in 2006 to see her daughter compete. He dined at Potobellos in Kingston then and told the restaurant he'd be back there when he returned.

Horse looked in the mouth - UPDATED

Horses once again will reign over the village as part of the “Hors’n Around Saugerties 2010” exhibit.

But there's a horse you may not enjoy fully.

West Shokan writer Martha Frankel informed me on Wednesday night a fiberglass horse that contains passages from one of her books has been flagged because of two complaints.

Apparently, some of the words in the horse - like "abortion," "miscarriage," "penis" and "vagina" - are not sitting well with some residents, and the Saugerties Area Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the event, is discussing the issue.

Frankel said that has been told that for inclusion, she has alter the submission and omit the words, which she doesn't want to do because she said the passages are written with empathy and because it would alter the artist's vision. There are now discussions about putting black tape on the horses' mouth and to mask the apparently offensive passages.

Shocking, I know.

This raises important questions:

* What's a "vagina"?
* Why is Martha Frankel calling me?
* What's up with all this horsing around artists' "Hors'n Around" entries?

There were a couple of complaints, apparently, but I'm told that before the Chamber discussed the issue with Frankel she decided to take matters into her own hands - with tape.

The writer says:

I went out to Saugerties and blacked out all words that people might have found offensive. ... One sentence said, "When Mara was born I loved her so much I would put her feet in my mouth."

The artist that did the work with Frankel blacked out 'feet' and 'mouth'.

So now the "cleaned" horse reads: "When Mara was born I loved her so much I would put her --- in my ----."

Problem solved!

Also, a korrecshun, the horse has no "penis."
